Anti-Trump Protests Being Organized Nationwide For Independence Day

This July 4, some Americans are skipping the barbecues and taking to the streets, not to celebrate Independence Day, but to protest President Donald Trump.

The protests are just the latest wave of action from the left since Trump returned to the White House for a second term. On June 14, while Trump held a massive national military parade in Washington, D.C., left-wing activists staged what they called “No Kings” protests across the country to “reject authoritarianism.”

Before the parade, Trump warned that “people that want to protest will be met with big force,” calling them “people that hate our country,” Time Magazine reported.

Alongside the “No Kings” activism, immigration protests erupted across the country over ICE raids ordered by the Trump Administration. The demonstrations started in Los Angeles and made national and international headlines after Trump deployed the National Guard and later the Marines, even though California Governor Gavin Newsom never asked for help. The move sparked backlash and a legal fight, but an appeals court eventually ruled that Trump could maintain control of the National Guard in Los Angeles.

Back in April, people also gathered in cities across the U.S. and around the world, including London, Paris, and Stockholm, to protest Trump and his then ally, Elon Musk, who at the time was leading the Department of Government Efficiency. The two have since had a very public falling out.

Now, another round of protests is being organized for July 4.

Women’s March, a group that organizes demonstrations against what it calls sexism and oppression, has posted a list of more than 140 events scheduled for Independence Day. The events range from marches and rallies to block parties. The group is encouraging people to organize even more.

According to Women’s March, the Free America Weekend is meant to highlight issues like poverty, unlawful orders, and “the grip of hate and the politics of fear.”

“This July 4th, while the U.S. marks Independence Day, we’ll gather across the country, on porches, in town squares, backyards, and streets, to stand for real freedom and build a vision of a Free America, brick by brick,” the group wrote in a public call for action.

“They want us scared, divided, and alone. They don’t want us to dream about freedom. But that’s exactly what we have to do,” the organization said.

After the widespread “No Kings” protests in June, the group is now planning what it calls “No Kings 2.0,” with events scheduled in Wisconsin, Louisiana, Wyoming, and at least ten other states.

While the original protests focused on the idea of “authoritarianism,” the new events are centered on immigration and ICE raids. The Green Bay rally’s event page says the goal is to support “community, justice [in] solidarity with our immigrant neighbors.” ICE arrests under Trump’s second term have reportedly surpassed 100,000.

Organizers in both Louisiana and Wyoming have emphasized that the protests will be nonviolent.

In Florida, activists are planning a demonstration near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach.

That same balloon was used in 2020 on Juneteenth in a protest over racial injustice following the death of George Floyd.

“We’re supposed to be celebrating America’s independence, and I felt a moral responsibility to stand up and declare our independence from Trump-ism,” activist Mark Offerman told the Palm Beach Daily News.

At the same time, a group called The People’s Union USA is calling for a stay-at-home protest. They are urging people to skip parades and fireworks, boycott large corporations, and spend their money in local communities instead.

The group also organized the “Economic Blackout” in February. Founder John Schwarz says this Independence Day protest is even more important.

“Do not wave a flag for a country that no longer waves it for you,” he said in a video. “The 4th of July is supposed to be a celebration of freedom, but what freedom are we actually talking about?”
